Patch Name: PHCO_33171
Patch Description: s700_800 11.23 auto_parms/set_parms/dhcpdb2conf
Creation Date: 05/07/25
Post Date: 05/09/09
Warning: 05/11/17 - This Non-Critical Warning has been issued by HP.
- PHCO_33171 introduced behavior that can result in xntpd(1M)
not being started or being configured incorrectly. If DHCP
is enabled, NTP is configured as directed by the DHCP server.
This can result in NTP being disabled if the DHCP server does
not return NTP configuration information and NTP server
entries which have been added to /etc/ntp.conf being removed
if the DHCP server does not return all NTP servers. Also,
the 'XNTPD' variable in /etc/rc.config.d/netdaemons may be
incorrectly set to '0' and manually added 'NTPDATE_SERVER'
variable lines may be removed at boot time if PHCO_33171 is
installed.
- Additional information on this behavior may be found in
Service Request 8606419977 (JAGaf79807).
- To avoid this behavior, HP recommends removing PHCO_33171
from systems booted as DHCP clients if all NTP configuration
information is not provided by the DHCP server.
- This behavior will be corrected in PHCO_34014, which will be
released as soon as possible.
Warning: 07/02/06 - This Non-Critical Warning has been issued by HP.
- PHCO_33171 introduced behavior that breaks the enhancement
documented in Service Request 8606330912 (JAGae92033) that
was introduced in PHCO_31848. The purpose of the enhancement
was to remove temporary files created in /tmp on the root
file system before the /tmp file system is mounted so that
the files did not accumulate over time on the root file
system.
- The same behavior is experienced with superseding patches
PHCO_34014 and PHCO_34838.
- Additional information on this behavior may be found in
Service Request 8606475421 (JAGag29772).
- If temporary files with names of the form sh$$.[0-9]*, each
with a size less than 500 bytes, remaining under the /tmp
mount point is not a problem, then no action is required. As
tested, each reboot of the system results in four such files
being created in the /tmp directory on the root file system
before the /tmp file system is mounted.
- To work around the behavior, the files can be manually
removed by bringing the system into single-user mode, which
unmounts the /tmp filesystem, and simply removing the files
in /tmp on the root file system.

PHCO_33171:
SR:8606410690 DTS:JAGaf70572
dhcpdb2conf may coredump from a segmentation violation.
SR:8606405117 DTS:JAGaf65037
The contents of /etc/default/tz indicate the timezone.
The default contents of this file (EST5EDT) is not
modified by set_parms.
SR:8606404494 DTS:JAGaf64416
Many of the hostname change programs in
/sbin/ch_hostname.d also need to run when set_parms
changes the IP address. There is no way for these external
programs to be aware of set_parms IP address changes.
SR:8606404500 DTS:JAGaf64422
Only one default route will be configured, even if the DHCP
server returned more than one route.
SR:8606401644 DTS:JAGaf61581
A message implies that a leading digit is permitted when
in fact it is disallowed and results in an error.
SR:8606378358 DTS:JAGaf38616
All filesystems listed in /etc/fstab are mounted during
system shutdown, resulting in unnecessary delays.
SR:8606382158 DTS:JAGaf42369
In some cases set_parms or auto_parms may lose new
networking configuration information specified in
/etc/resolv.conf. The modified configuration is
overwritten with the prior configuration.
SR:8606391190 DTS:JAGaf51335
This product update provides pre-enablement for future
expansion of the maximum length of the system nodename
and hostname. Any actual expansion capability may be
provided in a future HP-UX nodename and hostname
expansion product.
SR:8606391359 DTS:JAGaf51503
A misleading message was issued by set_parms when a long
hostname is used.
SR:8606391360 DTS:JAGaf51504
Cannot use set_parms to set a longer hostname.
SR:8606391847 DTS:JAGaf51979
In some cases set_parms or auto_parms may lose new
networking configuration information specified in
/etc/resolv.conf. The new configuration is overwritten
with the prior configuration.
SR:8606401511 DTS:JAGaf61448
After booting with DHCP, if an NTP server was not supplied,
"export XNTPD=1" was set in /etc/rc.config.d/netdaemons,
resulting in xntpd being started with an invalid server
address of "0.0.0.0".
SR:8606400640 DTS:JAGaf60589
In /sbin/set_parms.util used by set_parms) sets PATH to
/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/vue/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/lbin
In general, it is preferable to have /usr/bin ahead of
/usr/sbin and /sbin. However, for this particular script,
the path is set as it is in an intentional design decision.
PHCO_31848:
SR:8606167180 DTS:JAGad36466
When /etc/rc.config.d/netconf contains entries which
skip an index value, dhcpclient negotiation may be
attempted using a zero-length lan interface name. This
will result in a dhcpclient usage error message.
SR:8606368081 DTS:JAGaf28645
If set_parms is run with file systems that contain
critical commands unmounted, a number of error messages
and set_parms messages may be generated. These messages
may cause the original root cause failure message to
scroll off the screen and make problem diagnosis
difficult.
SR:8606339993 DTS:JAGaf00914
This product update provides pre-enablement for future
expansion of the maximum length of the system nodename and
hostname. Any actual expansion capability may be provided
in a future HP-UX nodename and hostname expansion product.
Upon installation, the nodename and hostname expansion
bundle (NodeHostNameXpnd) will install the full set of
product updates (including this one) needed to enable the
expansion.
If the nodename and hostname expansion bundle is not
installed, this product update will have no affect on your
system.
SR:8606193195 DTS:JAGad62407
The dhcpdb2conf command does not support multiple NIS
servers on a domain for fallback.
SR:8606186632 DTS:JAGad55842
Support for Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is missing.
SR:8606286645 DTS:JAGae50584
When a system configured for DHCP is moved to a new subnet
the system may hang on reboot when attempting to renew a
lease for an IP address not valid on the new subnet.
SR:8606136258 DTS:JAGad05384
A number of timezones in Asia and other parts of the world
are missing from set_parms. The timezone in South Africa
is incorrectly set to the wrong timezone and incorrectly
includes daylight savings.
SR:8606286648 DTS:JAGae50587
The auto_parms command may be allowed to execute other
than at initial boot when it should not.
SR:8606296843 DTS:JAGae60395
If the file /-r (a file named "-r" in the root directory)
exists on a system the system will boot into single user
mode rather than the correct multi-user mode.
SR:8606364587 DTS:JAGaf25226
When using the set_parms command to set the date with
values such as "8" or "9" the following error message is
generated "The specified number is not valid for this
command."
SR:8606200076 DTS:JAGad69260
The set_parms command considers IP addresses with values
that start with 0 (zero) as octal. For example, the IP
address 010.035.130.196 would be the same as the IP
address 8.29.130.196.
SR:8606330912 DTS:JAGae92033
If a file system is mounted at /tmp, after a number of
reboots the /tmp directory being hidden "under" the mount
point fills with temp files.
SR:8606187344 DTS:JAGad56551
When auto_parms is run on systems with many disks
"Input line _hp_hide_other_disks cannot be longer
than 3,000 bytes" error messages may be generated.
SR:8606172677 DTS:JAGad41937
On 11.11 systems with hyperfabric and/or atm cards,
the list of lans available for selection is inconsistent.
SR:8606172165 DTS:JAGad41427
Unable to change ip-address using set_parms.
SR:8606187199 DTS:JAGad56407
When using "set_parms timezone" it is not possible to
select the "Middle European daylight saving time" option.
Defect Description:
PHCO_33171:
SR:8606410690 DTS:JAGaf70572
In certain circumstances a pointer was not
properly initialized prior to use.
SR:8606405117 DTS:JAGaf65037
set_parms failed to modify /etc/default/tz when changing
the timezone.
SR:8606404494 DTS:JAGaf64416
The set_parms program did provide a means of having
external programs respond to IP address changes
Programs in /sbin/ch_ip_address.d will be run when
the IP address changes.
SR:8606404500 DTS:JAGaf64422
The original design of the dhcpdb2conf program did not
anticipate the possibility of DHCP returning more than one
default route.
SR:8606401644 DTS:JAGaf61581
Older message does not agree with newer and more restrictive
code.
SR:8606378358 DTS:JAGaf38616
auto_parms is run during system shutdown, and was mounting
all filesystems every time it was run. This is appropriate
for system startup, but not shutdown.
SR:8606382158 DTS:JAGaf42369
When set_parms needs to temporarily change networking
configuration the current configuration is saved. If a saved
configuration existed and the user changed networking
parameters the saved configuration could be restored and the
users changes would be lost. When user changes are made the
saved configuration becomes invalid and should be removed.
SR:8606391190 DTS:JAGaf51335
This product update contains some minor enhancements
required to pre-enable a future HP-UX nodename and
hostname expansion product bundle (NodeHostNameXpnd).
Hostname length may be up to 255 characters and
components of hostnames may be up to 63 characters. A
maximum hostname length of 63 characters (8 character
component length) is still recommended to maintain
compatibility with all HP-UX software.
SR:8606391359 DTS:JAGaf51503
A new system feature was not implemented in set_parms.
SR:8606391360 DTS:JAGaf51504
set_parms did not correctly support long hostnames.
SR:8606391847 DTS:JAGaf51979
When set_parms needs to temporarily change networking
configuration the current configuration is saved. If a saved
configuration existed and the user changed networking
parameters the saved configuration could be restored and the
users changes would be lost. When user changes are made the
saved configuration becomes invalid and should be removed.
SR:8606401511 DTS:JAGaf61448
dhcpdb2conf was incorrectly setting XNTPD=1 in
/etc/rc.config.d/netdaemons even when the DHCP server did
not supply a valid NTP server address.
SR:8606400640 DTS:JAGaf60589
An intentional decision was made to set the PATH variable as
it is in the script. To clarify that this is intentional, a
comment explaining the reason for this path ordering has
been added.
PHCO_31848:
SR:8606167180 DTS:JAGad36466
The auto_parms program sequences through each index
value instead of checking for values correctly defined
in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf. The program assumes index
values will be sequentially used. As a result, DHCP
negotiation may be attempted for index values not
correctly defined.
SR:8606368081 DTS:JAGaf28645
The set_parms command relys on a number of commands in
directories, such as /usr, that may be located on mounted
file systems. This command sometimes runs early in the
boot process. Any issues related to incorrect
configuration become hard to diagnose when missing
command error messages are pushed off the screen by
other messages.
SR:8606339993 DTS:JAGaf00914
This product update contains some minor enhancements
required to pre-enable a future HP-UX nodename and
hostname expansion product bundle (NodeHostNameXpnd).
Hostname length may be up to 255 characters and components
of hostnames may be up to 63 characters. A maximum
hostname length of 63 characters (8 character component
length) is still recommended to maintain compatibility with
all HP-UX software.
SR:8606193195 DTS:JAGad62407
The dhcpdb2conf command only processes the first IP
address in the dhcpclient.data file.
CR:8606186632 DTS:JAGad55842
Lack of support for the dhcpclient -N option in auto_parms
command means the hostname is not added to the DNS
database.
CR:8606286645 DTS:JAGae50584
A system configured for DHCP that is moved to a new subnet
attempts to renew the lease for the IP address on the old
subnet an unlimited number of times.
CR:8606136258 DTS:JAGad05384
The set_parms command has not kept up with the world-wide
expansion of technology. The South Africa timezone was
incorrectly encoded. Many timezones in Asia and other
parts of the world were not included.
SR:8606286648 DTS:JAGae50587
A script test was coded as SUCCESS instead of $SUCCESS
since the 10.20 version of auto_parms.
SR:8606296843 DTS:JAGae60395
If a file named "-r" is present in the directory
where "who -r" is executed the who command operates on
that file.
SR:8606364587 DTS:JAGaf25226
The shell (sh-posix) has had a number of versions. Octal
number handling has changed in different versions. Date
values such as "09" appear like invalid octal values to
the shell.
SR:8606200076 DTS:JAGad69260
The shell (sh-posix) interprets numbers that start with 0
(zero) as octal values. The set_parms warning message is
not enough protection. Unexpected IP address configuration
needs to be prevented.
SR:8606330912 DTS:JAGae92033
Mounting a file system over /tmp hides temp files so the
shell (sh-posix) is unable to remove them. These files
must be explicitly removed prior to file system mount.
SR:8606187344 DTS:JAGad56551
The H/W Path of each device is hidden from install
is saved in _hp_hide_other_disks. This list may be
longer than the 3,000 byte awk string editing buffer.
SR:8606172677 DTS:JAGad41937
Starting with 11.11 the set_parms command gives the user
the choice of which lan card to configure. To create the
list of lan interfaces to select from, set_parms uses both
ioscan and lanscan. There are some devices that show up
in ioscan -kFC lan that are not lan cards (fclan) and
cards that are lans that do not show up in lanscan (atm).
So the lan list indexing fails.
SR:8606172165 DTS:JAGad41427
When "set_parms ip_address" command is issued, the GUI
window pops up asking for the new IP address. When the new
IP address is entered, the command hangs and finally times
out.
SR:8606187199 DTS:JAGad56407
When using "set_parms timezone" it is not possible to
set the "Middle European daylight saving time" option.
Enhancement:
No (superseded patches contained enhancements)
PHCO_31848:
Support added for future maximum length expansion of
nodename and hostname.
